Family Readiness Worksheet

Families dealing with trauma experiences often benefit from counseling services to help with healing. But with so many things to consider, it can be hard to decide if now is the right time or if it would be better to wait for some time to pass.

To address this need, we've designed a brief worksheet for families to use. It is based on information shared by families about their own experiences. We hope going through this worksheet will help families make decisions about their readiness to start trauma counseling and feel more prepared when the time comes.

The worksheet is a collaboration among the Family-Informed Trauma Treatment Center at the University of Maryland, Center for Resilient Families at the University of Minnesota, and National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

Partnering with Families and Youth:

In 2008, FITT Center collaborated with the Maryland Coalition of Families for Children’s Mental Health (MD Coalition) and Youth MOVE-Maryland to include family and youth voice into the Center’s outreach, awareness/training activity and intervention and product development. The partners conducted local focus groups to “listen and learn” from the Baltimore City families and youth impacted by trauma.

The focus group report is a summary of reflections and remarks made by Baltimore City families impacted by trauma. The goal of the focus groups was to learn about how trauma impacted family life and to better understand how families cope with frightening and overwhelming events and incorporates this knowledge into FITT Center products and interventions. Click on the link here to read the full report.
